Wisconsin Talk Radio Accused of Not Offering Equal Time in Recall Election

The Wisconsin recall election being held Tuesday already have an effect on talk radio, which liberals claim hasn’t been fair to Democrats, Talkers Magazine reports.

The liberal groups claim Clear Channel’s WISN  and Journal Broadcasting’s WTMJ — both in Milwaukee — have not followed the Federal Communication Commission’s rule on equal time for political candidates within 60 days of an election.

Talkers Magazine legal editor Steven J.J. Weisman believes the radio hosts will likely be protected by the “news interview” exemption. But that is not a certainty, he said.

It remains to be seen how big a role talk radio has played in the Wisconsin race and the fate of Gov. Scott Walker. But this wouldn’t be the first recall election that talk radio played a major role in. In 2003, it was state and local conservative talk radio shows that mobilized California residents to sign the recall petition for Gov. Gray Davis. The Right Frequency, to be released in August, gives a detailed account of how talk radio led to Davis’s demise in the Golden State.  The book is available for pre-order now.
